Wednesday December 8th 2010 – Is this really happening?

In a lot of ways today was not great, as I am really beginning to struggle with the dreaded return to work. Well, of course, I’ve been struggling with it for months. The problem is that my previous coping mechanism of, ‘no this just isn’t happening’, has recently expired. As a result, I can’t go more than about 5-6 minutes at a time without blubbing.
I keep clutching at straws that basically aren’t even straws. The latest was living outside. I suppose I was hoping to go back to one of my old camps. Is that an option, simpler living? I’d really like to run away into the hills and eat berries, but I know I’d last about half an hour before going hysterical and turning all Blair Witch Project.
Not ideal. However, today there was a sterling silver lining in the form of a competent Big Ugly Engineer. Yes, it’s true, he came, he saw and he repaired. We now have both connection and throughput. It’s a miracle!
His explanation of the fault, however, was not so encouraging. It appears that there are too many of us travelling down the same ‘pipe’. Whilst The Big Ugly do not have any plans at present to add others to this ‘pipe’, the problem won’t be fixed permanently until people are taken off. The only way people will be taken off ...is if they switch suppliers.
So, was this The Big Ugly’s Master Plan all along? Either way; for them it’s win-win.
Unfortunately, for us, it’s a lose-lose. It doesn’t really matter what we do. Even if we switch, we’ll still have to pay The Big Ugly, deal with The Big Ugly and have nightmares about The Big Ugly.
Interestingly, The Big Ugly have no record of this issue when they call this evening to confirm the fix. However, they do book an appointment for Friday December 31st with another specialist. Do they anticipate further issues? No, they say, it’s just for peace of mind. How very odd.
For tonight, at least, I’ll have a little throughput in my dreams...
